Broken dreams club
By girls
Somehow in my head the lead singer of girls has merged with Eddie Perfect. I guess cause they both sing with a lisp, (or I've imagined they do). That's not so important. What's important is that this is great. There's quite a lot of Elvis Costello and 60s reverby sounds in here; clever memorable melodies that sound like you remember them from somewhere; and the crisp sound of a well-rehearsed band playing together in a room. Just really catchy smart music.
The conformist
By Doveman
I bought this album recently for a friend after hearing a few tracks here and there. And to make sure I didn't buy a dud I've been hanging round his myspace and listening to tracks off the album. Good news for me and him: It's really good. Normally I'd be turned off by the almost-too-precious whispery vocals but the songs are sophisticated and stirring. Especially liked the stuff with the National's Matt Berninger. Weirdly, Doveman also covered the entire footloose album.
Soft airplane
By Chad van gaalen
Sure it has banjo and Neil Young style vocals but stay with me alt-folk haters, there's so much more about this album. It shows a genuine creative spark and rousing energy that many of the Oldhamesque singer-songwriters seem to lack. In many places Sufjan Stevens is probably a better comparison, not that he really sounds like either artist. This is probably my favourite album at the moment. And it's also the only album I know brave enough to deal with the topic of Teenage mutant ninja masks.

I don't actually own this album but I wish I did. Sweet, wistful indie pop. They remind me of the more poppy bits of Guided by voices. Listen to publish my love.
ghosts of the great highway
By Sun Kil Moon
Beautifully intricate, layered downbeat fuzzy-folk. I don't actually own this album, I've got April which we've played to get Alex to sleep most nights for the past 9 months. But this is as good, if not slightly more interesting. Carry me Ohio is unbelievably good. Oddly, he also covers AC/DC and Modest mouse songs.
