The Phoenix Files: Mutation

By Chris Morphew

This is the third in an ongoing series of thriller/sci-fi books written for upper primary school kids. They are all elegantly and vividly written but without ever losing the (15 year old) narrator's voice. The plots are absolutely gripping, and once again I find myself hankering for the next installment.

Oculi

By Dean Sewell and co

Oculi is a massive book full of exquisite photos capturing "the beauty, wonder and struggle of everyday life". One Saturday I spent a very long time flicking through every single photography book in Kinokuniya (there are a lot), and this was the one I liked best. All the rest are either specific to a region/theme or contain these perverse, clichéd sexual/violent shots. *dislike* Beauty is what I look for.

The Rage Against God

By Peter Hitchens

Peter is Christopher's brother. He's a Christian and he argues that there are some profound holes in his brother's thinking. It's a fairly dense book, especially when it comes to political history. As a result his chief points are sometimes a little obscured. Yet in total, it's a very worthy and stimulating read.

The Bible

By Almighty God

What to say? This is a book like no other. People like me are convinced it's a record of God speaking, using ordinary people to get his messages across. It's packed full of genres and people like me believe that when you read it today you're not just reading an ancient book, but that God is directly speaking those words to you and maybe even changing you as you read. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John at the start of the second section, the New Testament, are a good place to start.
