The Secret In Their Eyes
By Juan José Campanella
Fantastic Argentinian drama about a retired justice agent who writes a novel about an unsettled case from 25 years ago. In the process, he dwells on how to bring closure to past events of his own life. Very sensitive and subtle, built upon unsaid words, concealed complicity and contained passions. So beautiful.
The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
By Wes Anderson
Great comedy with Bill Murray, playing a decadent sea explorer who sets off to kill the shark who ate his partner. Absolutely love the cynical, self-deprecating, unassuming kind of humour. Made me laugh from beginning to end. Brazilian musician Seu Jorge plays a member of the crew and sings David Bowie songs for the soundtrack. Lovely.
Synecdoche, New York
By Charlie Kaufman
Pretentious movie with a philosophical twist, but nonetheless one of my favorite of all times. Kaufman explores the several instances of human life, in all their dimensions, from the self, or rather the various selves of an individual, to the city of New York, represented by the warehouse/theater, and representing the whole world. It's a dark film, that portraits our lack of peculiarity in life, in which we are nothing more than actors playing interchangeable roles. Gorgeous.
